Ana Mendieta: Silueta series

As I missed the lesson with Trace Task, I am going to do some self-study to catch up on what I missed. However, to do it as good as possible I have to do research on photographers who did similar photoshoots to my topic.  In this particular post, I want to share with you my research on the art of Ana Mendieta and her Silueta Series, which is made from 200 silhouettes.

'My art is the way I re-establish the bonds that unite me to the universe. It is a return to the maternal source. Through my earth/body sculptures, I become one with the earth'. (Mendieta, 1981)

Ana Mendieta successfully shows her connection with nature, with earth, and with everything that surrounds us in the natural environment. In the photo below, she presents herself as a part of nature. When I look at Siluetas (Image from Yagul, 1973) only one message comes to my mind: 'When I die, I will be one or a million of these beautiful flowers'.

'Ana Mendieta’s experimentation with the self, through absence and presence, subversion and temporality, questions the philosophical undertaking of the ‘trace’ and its relationship to performance and art.' (Nestor, 2021)

Silueta en Fuego(1976) makes me numb, I do not want to take my eyes off it. As Susan Best noticed, Mendieta’s Silueta Series signifies a ‘feminist space [of] dwelling’, where the ‘female body [is] at once present in outline and yet absent in actuality.’ (2007) The image below shows the combination of fire and earth. Two elements combined to form an impressive combo. This image represents a flame that will eventually subside, but leave its mark on the ground.

As Hatty commented, 'Therefore, throughout the Silueta Series, the incision of the body into the land generates a mark-making that is undone by the earth’s materiality and temporal transformations'.

The creativity of Mendiet is a breath of fresh air in perfomance art.
