Paul Auster American writer Author of the book "4 3 2 1" |
The photograph above depicts Paul Oster, an American writer working in the direction of postmodernism, absurdism, and existentialism. He is known for his works such as "Timbuktu", "Moon Palace", "City of glass" and many others. Oster’s work was inspired by studies of identity and sentimental meaning, which often consider the function of coincidence and random events. In addition, the author conducted research in the field of relations between people, their colleauges and the environment, which can be traced in the "Book of Illusions" - 2002 and "Lunar Palace" - 1989. Oster’s protagonist constantly discovers and begins to realize that he is forced to work as part of something incomprehensible, something beyond what can be perceived by patterns.
Despite the huge number of works by Paul Oster, in this article I would like to recommend to you, dear readers, the book "4 3 2 1", which is also depicted in the photo above. This book tells the story of four lives of one person which can be insanely different from each other. Not all of the stories of the protagonist Ferguson’s life have a good ending, but the book is interesting because it shows different events, different possible ways of continuation or end.
"Time moved in two directions because every step into the future carried a memory of the past," one of the Fergusons muses, "... and while all people were bound together by the common space they shared, their journeys through time were all different, which meant that each person lived in a slightly different world from everyone else."
