Duane Michals as a Sequential Photographer

In this post I would like to tell you about one of the famous sequential photographers whose work inspired me to create my own sequential images that you will see in the next post. This is Duane Michals.

Duane Michals by Paul Waldman

Michael Duane is an American photographer who specializes in sequential photography. His first successful photography exhibition took place in New York in 1963 and was inspired by his vacation in the Soviet Union(USSR). Because he did not have a studio, he took pictures of people in their familiar environment, which filled his photographs with life and naturalness. One of the distinctive feature is that the photographer signs his series of images by hand. Each of his signatures fill the images with
new meaning and feelings.
Death Comes to the Old Lady
1969

The picture above is not just a photograph, but a story. The inscription describing the series, gives it tragedy. The composition of the photograph also conveys a sense of tragedy. At first the viewer is shown an elderly woman, and then behind her back appears a grown man who was probably her husband and long dead. But no one knows for sure if it is. This uknown is both frightening and fascinating. I can’t help but mention the blur effect that Michael Duane skillfully applied during the shooting. It is thanks to it the main characters disappear from the picture and it is possible to understand that the Old Lady disappeared as the man behind her.
The Human Condition
1969

The next picture, shown just above, begins with a man standing on a subway platform 14th.  The train almost arrives at the station, and in the meantime, a light falls on the main character. It soon becomes brighter and bigger. Light starts to brighten up and grow until it turns into a whole universe. The name itself already speaks about itself. As for me, this photograph tells us the idea that we are all and nothing at the same time. It was with the universe that our existence began, it continues because of it and it will end with it too. The meaning of the series was conveyed by the game with light, as well as the overlay of photos one on the other.
