His name was Nik. Nik was a high school leader. Everyone
liked him or made a view that he did. Every girl wanted to be his girlfriend.
However, he was not interested in any relationships. He remembered only one
thing. ‘He should stay’. These words belonged to his mother. She said them four
years ago when he was 14. Then, no one knew what happened that day. She did not
say a word anymore. She was gone. No one else had seen her. She was such a
beauty with black hair and green-as-moss eyes. It was the only thing Nik
remembered about his mother. He did not even remember if he loved her at all.
But he knew he would never forget those eyes. They went right into his brain
and stayed there forever. Many legends surrounded the disappearance
of the missing woman, but Nik did not believe in any of them. Someone was
spreading gossip that his mother was a loose woman and ran away with her a
young lover to another country. Someone began to spread whole mystical stories.
This type of person claimed that the whole trouble was connected
with the forest.
The fact is that this forest was in the city itself. Every person living in the
suburbs passed through it to get to the centre, where there was a school and
many other public places, where teenagers liked to hang out. This forest did
not look frightening, but because of the large number of tall trees, residents
were afraid to walk there, as the sun’s rays hardly fell on the path through
all trees’ leaves. Especially in the evening. It was also supported by stories
of grandmothers selling flowers out of the woods. No one knows where are they
from, how old are they and why their appearance never changes. No one saw as
they actually sell their flowers to someone, but every morning they had new ones. The only thing why people remembered about them was the obsession of old
women to tell their terrifying stories to scare kids. When Nik was little, he
also got into this situation when he was told a local legend by the same grannies.
“That was a long time ago when the green tops of the trees
covered the entire territory of our land. People lived at the beginning of the
river, which flowed into this very forest, forming there a whole lake. No other
lake could compare with our blueness and the transparency of ours. There were
many legends about it, and they were all true. The water was a source of powerful
strength for those who needed it. It could heal any wounds, bring loved ones
home, and even defeat death by giving the deceased a chance to swallow fresh
air and laugh as if he would be alive. However, every coin has two sides. And our
lake wasn’t an exception. It had a mysterious fog that surrounded it, so no one
could find the real way to our gifted place. Everyone who wanted to find his
fate decides to go to try his luck. However, many families lost their members
in this unknown smog. Despite the loss, everyone knows that death doesn’t
exist in this place. The thing is, death doesn’t see this place, it can’t get
in there, and neither can sunlight. And if it succeeds, it, like all others, will
be lost among those it has come for, and even its braid will not be able to
dispel this terrible and difficult fog.”
